'Eastenders'
The soap opera ‘Eastenders’ is a very popular drama series on BBC 1. It was originally meant to be called ‘East 8’. The very first episode was shown on the 19th of February 1985 on BBC 1 and still going on. The soap takes place on Walford Square where most of the characters live; Walford Square is actually Fasset square in Hackney. It tells the everyday life of different people in the East end of London. During the first eight years of the soap it was broadcast twice a week, then three times and eventually four times a week because of the immense success it had and still has. Eastenders is one of the most top-rated programs in Great Britain. The characters are grouped in to families each having a function on the square. EastEnders also features a number of elderly residents, who are used to show vulnerability and stalwart-like characters and sometimes for comedic purposes. EastEnders has been known to have a "comedy double-act" in the show, Another recurring character type is the smartly dressed businessman, often involved in gang culture and crime, who is seen as a local authority figure. In the 1980s, EastEnders featured gritty storylines involving drugs and crime, representing the issues faced by working-class Britain
The theme song of ‘Eastenders’ is also very popular in Great Britain, it was even turned into a famous song called ‘Anyone can fall in love’ by Done Black.
One of the main difficulties in watching Eastenders is the accent of the characters, they speak the London cockney which is not always easy. And if you have missed an episode during the week you can catch up on sunday afternoons with the omnibus version, your you can log on to their website where there is a summary of the previous episode: http://www.bbc.co.uk/eastenders/. So all I can say is ENJOY!
